During the worst chest pains of her life, Izzy said these words to her father, Paul, who was anxiously driving her to the hospital. Paul had seen Izzy go through so much in her short life: seven weeks in the newborn ICU, a heart transplant at 10 weeks old, blood draws, biopsies, flus and six bouts of pneumonia in one year alone. But these chest pains were unlike anything she had experienced before.
Yet Izzy remains strong, and is her father’s hero. On Saturday, she looked and acted as though nothing could stop her as she strode confidently down the runway of her very own fashion show. She held an audience of over 240 rapt as she modeled her stylish designs for Earth, Fire and Water—all part of an imagined world on which she had based her costumes. For months, she worked with a costume designer and seamstress to bring these visions to life.
In fact, a small army, not unlike a true fashion show, worked behind the scenes to make Izzy’s one true wish, to be a fashion designer, come to dazzling life. Twitter literally set the stage for the occasion—harnessing a team to design the space in their headquarters building, orchestrate the lighting, provide the audio visual and even order custom-made gold macarons with her name on them.
Hundreds of volunteers came to support her and throw flowers. Many more followed along live on social media. All of them saw images of the newborn on screen with the large scar on her chest. She bore little resemblance to the confident, energetic and lovely young woman who demonstrated the power of determination, imagination, and of a wish granted.
