Five year old Scarlett has a bleeding disorder that is so rare, that when her mom Kari asked their doctor about it, they couldn’t find any other case studies about it in the last ten years.
And it is so life threatening that merely grazing her chin on a trip down the slide instantly causes a severe bruise, the need for immediate medical attention and the possibility of hemorrhaging. So every day for Scarlett’s parents is filled with the very real possibility that what for everyone else would be a minor injury can became a life-threatening emergency.
And yet for a time recently, all that was put aside. Scarlett’s trip to Disney World to see a parade and meet the princesses was a chance for her to have her “hopes, dreams and wishes unfold right before her eyes” says Kari. “We are literally beaming and my jaw hurts from smiling so much from watching my daughter in a state of such pure joy for one whole week.” During Scarlett’s visit to Disney World she got to participate in a singing contest, swim, see Cinderella’s castle and go on a jungle cruise, and as she told her mom, “I didn’t even think about my bleeding disorder, I forgot I even had it!” This brought her mom to tears; “If this isn’t the reason you guys do this then I don’t know what is.” Yes, that’s exactly why we do this!
