Earlier this year, 3-year-old Kareem started preschool, and his favorite thing in class is the aquarium. He also likes the ocean because of the birds and the sounds it makes. Although he is nonverbal, his parents understand this and thought a trip the beach for his wish would combine all of these elements.
Kareem’s very rare condition, generalized convulsive epilepsy, requires a lot of medical equipment and 24 hour a day nursing care. Because of this, his wish would need to take place close to home and to the hospital.
Help making wishes come true can come from many sources, and in this case it was our friends at Airbnb and Avis who played significant roles. Airbnb donated five restful nights at the beautiful Oceanside home not far from where Kareem and his brother, sisters and parents live and Avis provided the use of a minivan that would accommodate the family of six.
His mom, Genan, shared this with us: “I don't know what it is about the ocean that is so healing - maybe it is its vastness, maybe its timelessness, maybe because so much of it is unknown.” She says that during his wish “Kareem had the best sleep I have ever seen him have. He enjoyed sitting and watching the waves, listening to the sounds of the ocean, and watching birds. He did dip his feet in the ocean and every evening watched the gorgeous sunset.”
