Eight-year-old Benjamin loves Legos. He has wanted to go to the actual Lego factory in Denmark since we was only four. Thanks to donors and volunteers like you, Make-A-Wish was able to make Benjamin’s dream come true, while easing some of the suffering he undergoes because of his blood disorder.
For the past three years, Benjamin has been receiving blood transfusions every three weeks. Each night, he takes an iron chelation medicine that runs for 10 hours through a pump and a needle in his belly, and he has also undergone various bone marrow genetic testing. Once Benjamin learned he would be receiving a wish, those treatments became a bit more bearable. “He doesn't seem to mind the day long transfusion appointments, labs and the chelation medicine at night so much now as he something exciting to think about,” said Benjamin’s mom, Jackie. “He is so excited to be part of Make-A-Wish and tells everyone — his friends, teachers, doctors, relatives — all about Make-A-Wish and how they should support it!”
As soon as Benjamin found out that his wish to go to LEGOLAND Denmark was going to come true, his excitement began mounting. His mom explained, “He is really looking forward to his trip! He has two tour guide books that he looks at everyday now and is constantly watching YouTube videos of LEGOLAND in Denmark. It is pretty much all he talks about.”
As the wish drew near, a pizza party at was the ideal wish celebration send-off. California Pizza Kitchen in Walnut Creek hosted a wish celebration for Benjamin’s family and wish grantors. The manager even brought six different Lego sets and had them waiting on the table when they arrived.
Benjamin’s wish trip was everything he hoped it would be. He got to take his first international flight and stay at the Hotel LEGOLAND. A main highlight was the LEGO Inside Tour, where Benjamin and his family got to see how LEGO® bricks are made, met with LEGO designers, and visited the original home of LEGO Group founder Ole Kirk Kristiansen.
Following his spectacular wish experience, Benjamin has even decided he wants to be a Make-A-Wish volunteer when he is older!
