Becoming a Volunteer

Steps to Becoming a Volunteer

Step 1
Review the positions currently available. Contact the Volunteer Manager at the chapter office to express interest, learn about the open position and RSVP to attend a Volunteer Orientation.

Step 2
Attend a (30-40 minute) Volunteer Orientation Session to become familiar with the Foundation’s Volunteer Program, philosophy, needs, policies, procedures and expectations. All orientation attendees will be provided with a Volunteer Application and written information about the Make-A-Wish Foundation®.

Step 3
Complete and return the Volunteer Application to the chapter office. Upon receipt, the Volunteer Manager or Volunteer Coordinator will contact the individual’s personal references and will work with the new volunteer to set up a brief phone interview. Volunteers will also be required to provide a background check (based on instructions from Make-A-Wish). The entire process usually can be completed in 1-4 weeks.

Step 4
When all the steps (orientation, application, background check, references and phone interview) have been satisfactorily completed, the Volunteer Manager will contact the new volunteer to officially welcome him/her as a registered Make-A-Wish® volunteer.

Note: Any volunteer interested in becoming a wish-granting volunteer will be required to attend a separate 4-5 hour Wish Granter Training session prior to becoming involved in wish activities.

Additional Information
While the background check and application are being processed, volunteers are welcome to participate in any of the quarterly meetings or Wish Granter Trainings, referred to in our monthly volunteer newsletter. Volunteers must attend a Wish Granter Training session and complete our entire application process prior to meeting with wish children and their families.
