San Francisco, CA December 9, 2013 — Inspired by the wish that engulfed a city in caring and compassion while the world watched, San Francisco Giants Pitcher Matt Cain and his wife Chelsea issued a challenge to Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area Executive Director Patricia Wilson. The challenge, in the form of a $50,000 matching grant, is for others to join them in supporting Make-A-Wish. When the Cain’s heard that Wilson was going to take a plunge in the San Francisco Bay on Saturday as part of the organization’s Brave the Bay event, they initially thought their fundraising could help prevent her from plunging. She went in anyway, braving the below average air temperatures and icy cold water, along with SFPD Chief Greg Suhr and many members of the Make-A-Wish Board of Directors.
Wilson had initially pledged to do the plunge if her supporters could help her raise $7,500—the cost of a typical wish. Since the challenge was released late Friday night, her total has surpassed $20,000. But she has until 8pm on Wednesday December 11th to hit the $50,000 goal that will trigger the Cain’s match.
In a statement, Matt and Chelsea Cain said, “ We really want to recognize Patricia Wilson and Make-A-Wish in their efforts to bring an entire country together for Miles’ wish (#SFBatkid). This is just one of the many wishes she fulfills each year. Make-A-Wish has brought so much love into the families of these children. By having a wish, the wish children and their families can forget for a moment that they are fighting cancer or other diseases. We want to reward Patricia’s hard work so we have committed to match your donations for her fundraising up to $50,000. Please help us get there!”
Said Wilson before the event, “I’m stunned and honored. While everyone knows the San Francisco Bay is frigid, there is no possible way I will be cold. This generosity by the Cain’s will warm all of us. I’m humbled and hope this inspires more folks to help us reach more children.”
To participate in this challenge, make a donation in any amount here. All proceeds to benefit Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area.
